How Long an IRS Refund Takes

Only the IRS controls when a refund is issued, and the IRS publishes no date for any individual return in advance. What the IRS does publish is a set of general statements about how refunds move, and this page collects them, each one attributed to the IRS page it comes from. The short version, in the IRS's own figures: most refunds on electronically filed returns paid by direct deposit are issued in less than 21 days; refunds on returns claiming the earned income credit are held until mid-February by law; paper returns and amended returns are measured in weeks beyond that.

PlainStub cannot check or predict your refund. This site holds no information about your return and has no connection to IRS systems. The IRS tool that tracks an individual refund is Where's My Refund, on irs.gov. The IRS states that it shows a status within 24 hours after an e-filed return is accepted. You will need your Social Security number, your filing status, and the exact refund amount shown on your return.

The IRS's own timing statements

These are the processing statements the IRS publishes for the filing season, stated as the IRS states them. They describe the general run of returns. None of them is a date for your return, and the IRS advises taxpayers not to rely on receiving a refund by a specific date, especially for major purchases or paying bills.

Refund timing as the IRS states it
Filed electronically, refund by direct depositThe IRS issues more than nine out of ten refunds in less than 21 days on returns filed this way (IRS, direct deposit guidance). Its refunds page puts the typical time for an e-filed return at 3 weeks.
Return mailed on paperSix or more weeks from the date the IRS receives the mailed return (IRS, Refunds page).
Amended return, Form 1040-XAllow 8 to 12 weeks to process an amended return; in some cases it may take up to 16 weeks (IRS, Where's My Amended Return). Its status can be checked starting 3 weeks after the form is submitted.
Refund paid by paper checkSlower than direct deposit on the same return. The IRS describes combining electronic filing with direct deposit as the fastest way it pays a refund, which is a statement about method, not a date.

only the IRS holds your refund date

The mid-February hold, set by law

One delay is written into a statute rather than left to processing speed. The IRS states that by law, refunds on tax returns that include the earned income credit are held until mid-February, to prevent fraud; that rule comes from the PATH Act, and it holds the whole refund, not only the credit part of it. The IRS also states that the additional child tax credit can be complicated and requires more time to review, so a return claiming it can move more slowly than an ordinary return. A refund on such a return filed in late January therefore cannot arrive before mid-February, however early the return was filed, and the IRS's 21 day description does not run until the hold lifts. The child tax credit calculator page sets out the same hold where the credit itself is explained.

Why a refund slows down

The IRS lists the common reasons a refund is delayed, and they are worth reading before assuming anything is wrong:

Checking, and when the IRS can say more

The IRS states that refund status is available within 24 hours after the IRS accepts an e-filed return, through Where's My Refund or an IRS online account, and that checking more often does not move anything: the status is the status. If a refund check is lost or stolen, the IRS runs a refund trace, which can be started through the refund tracker or the automated hotline at 800-829-1954. For a person on the phone, the IRS's Tax Time Guide sets the threshold plainly: representatives can only research the status of a refund if 21 days or more have passed since the return was e-filed, or 6 weeks or more since it was mailed. Before those points, the answer a representative can give is the same status the tool already shows.

Questions and answers

Can PlainStub tell me when my refund will arrive?

No. PlainStub has no access to IRS systems, holds no information about your return, and does not estimate refund dates. The IRS tool that tracks an individual refund is Where's My Refund, at irs.gov. It asks for your Social Security number, your filing status, and the exact refund amount from your return, and it is the only status the IRS publishes for a specific return.

Is 21 days a promise?

No. The figure is the IRS's own description of the usual case: the IRS states that it issues most refunds in less than 21 days when a return is filed electronically and the refund is paid by direct deposit, and that some returns need more review and take longer. The IRS also advises taxpayers not to rely on receiving a refund by a specific date, especially for major purchases or paying bills. A return that needs corrections or further review moves on the IRS's timetable, not on the 21 day description.

My refund is smaller than my return showed. Why?

One route the IRS describes is an offset. The IRS states that a refund may be reduced to pay prior taxes owed, and may also be reduced to pay a past due debt such as child support, a federal agency nontax debt, or state income tax. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service, which issues IRS refunds, mails a notice explaining an offset of that kind. The IRS also makes its own corrections to some returns, which can raise or lower the refund, and mails a notice explaining any adjustment it makes.

When can the IRS tell me anything by phone?

Sooner than most people expect, there is nothing to tell. The IRS states that Where's My Refund shows a status within 24 hours after an e-filed return is accepted, and the automated refund hotline is 800-829-1954. For a person on the phone, the IRS's Tax Time Guide states that representatives can only research the status of a refund once 21 days or more have passed since the return was e-filed, or once 6 weeks have passed since it was mailed.
