Forms W-2 and 1099 · Tax year 2026
Where Tips and Overtime Are Reported: The New Boxes on the W-2, 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC and 1099-K
The same two amounts, your tips and your overtime premium, are reported in a different place on each 2026 form. On a W-2 they are Box 12 codes TP and TT, with your occupation code in Box 14b. The 1099 forms each carry their own new boxes for 2026: boxes 1b, 1c and 1d on the 1099-NEC, boxes 13a, 13b and 14 on the 1099-MISC, and boxes 1c and 1d on the 1099-K, which has no overtime box at all. The table below is the whole map, and every box in it is taken from that form's own 2026 IRS instructions, named in the Sources.

How to read the map
- On the 1099 forms, the new boxes break down a total that is already there. The 1099-NEC instructions say to enter in Box 1b the cash tips "included in box 1a", and the same pattern holds for its Box 1d, for 1099-MISC Boxes 13a and 14 against the Box 3 total, and for 1099-K Box 1c against its Box 1a total. The tip and overtime figures are parts of the total, never amounts added on top of it, so the totals are not counted twice.
- On the W-2, the amounts are separate Box 12 entries. Code TP and code TT are entries of their own in Box 12, each with its own amount, and Box 14b carries the occupation code that goes with code TP.
- Cash tips, as the instructions define the words. The 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC instructions state that cash tips include tips paid in cash or charged by customers. These are the designated tips the payer knows about, which is why a figure can differ from a worker's own records of cash handed over and never reported to the payer.
- The occupation code works the same way on all four forms. Each form's instructions say to enter up to two codes, for the occupations the tips were received in, and that if any tips were received in a nonqualifying occupation, 000 must be entered as one of the codes. The codes themselves are the 71 Treasury Tipped Occupation Codes from the final regulations, T.D. 10044, published in full on the Treasury Tipped Occupation Codes page. One printing detail, recorded because this page prints headings as they appear: the 1099-NEC instructions head the box "Treasury Tipped Occupation Codes(s) (TTOC)", while the 1099-MISC and 1099-K instructions print "Code(s)".
- Read the 1099-K numbering carefully. On Form 1099-K, Box 1b is Card Not Present Transactions, the gross amount where the card was not present. It is not a tips box. Tips on a 1099-K are in Box 1c, and the occupation code in Box 1d.
- The overtime premium is the premium only, on every form that carries it. The 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC instructions define the amount the same way the W-2 code TT works: the compensation required under section 7 of the Fair Labor Standards Act that is more than the regular rate, so only the "half" portion of time-and-a-half pay is reported, never the full overtime wage.
- Trump Account contributions appear on the W-2 only. An employer's contributions for an employee are reported in Box 12 with code TA. None of the three 1099 forms has a box or an instruction for them, because the contributions are an employment benefit, and the 1099 forms report payments to people who are not employees.
Which form did you get?
Four forms cover most working arrangements. Which one arrives depends on how you were paid, and nothing in this list says anything about any individual form: only the payer who issued it can correct it.
- Form W-2 comes from an employer, for an employee. Tips are code TP, the overtime premium is code TT, and the occupation code is Box 14b. The W-2 decoder explains every code on the form.
- Form 1099-NEC comes from a business that paid you directly for services, as a contractor rather than an employee. The total is Box 1a, nonemployee compensation, and the 2026 form breaks tips, the occupation code and the overtime premium out of it in Boxes 1b, 1c and 1d.
- Form 1099-MISC covers payments that are reported as other income in Box 3, among its other payment types. Where such a payment includes tips or an overtime premium, Boxes 13a, 13b and 14 break them out of the Box 3 total.
- Form 1099-K comes from a payment settlement entity: a card network or a payment platform that settled the payments. It reports gross transactions in Box 1a, tips in Box 1c and the occupation code in Box 1d, and it has no overtime box.
- More than one form is normal. A worker with a job and platform income on the side can receive a W-2 and a 1099-K in the same January, and the tips on each are reported in that form's own boxes.
What these figures feed
These reported amounts are the figures the two new deductions on Schedule 1-A are built from. For employees, the IRS states in Fact Sheet FS-2026-13 that for 2026 the tips and overtime deductions are generally limited to the amounts the employer separately reported, which is what codes TP and TT carry. For the self-employed, IRS Tax Tip 2026-26 states that qualified tips must be reported on Form 1099-K, 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC, or on Form 4137, and that the tips deduction is capped at the net income of the business; the rideshare and delivery driver page works through that side in full. Fact sheets and tax tips are IRS guidance, not binding legal authority, and this page labels them as such wherever they are used.
Estimate the deductions themselves on the tips deduction calculator and the overtime deduction calculator.
Questions and answers
Where do tips appear on a Form 1099-NEC?
In Box 1b, labelled Cash Tips, with the Treasury Tipped Occupation Code in Box 1c. Both boxes break down the Box 1a total: the tips are part of the nonemployee compensation in Box 1a, not an amount on top of it. The overtime premium, where the payer reports it, is in Box 1d, labelled Overtime Compensation, and is also part of the Box 1a total.
Is there a box for overtime on a Form 1099-K?
No. The 2026 Form 1099-K carries a Cash Tips box (Box 1c) and a Treasury Tipped Occupation Code box (Box 1d), and no overtime box of any kind. The complete box list in the 2026 Instructions for Form 1099-K contains no overtime compensation entry. A missing overtime figure on a 1099-K is the form working as printed, not an error by the platform.
What does 000 mean in the occupation code box?
It means some of the tips were received in an occupation that is not on the Treasury list. Every form that carries an occupation code box (W-2 Box 14b, 1099-NEC Box 1c, 1099-MISC Box 13b, 1099-K Box 1d) uses the same rule, stated in each form's instructions: enter up to two codes for the occupations the tips were received in, and if any of the tips were received in a nonqualifying occupation, 000 must be one of the codes entered.
I am paid through an app or a payment platform. Which form reports my tips?
Form 1099-K, sent by the payment settlement entity that pays you, where one is issued. For third party network transactions, the 2026 instructions state an exception: the platform reports only where the gross amount of transactions exceeds $20,000 and the number of transactions exceeds 200 in the calendar year; payment card transactions carry no such exception in the instructions. On the 1099-K itself, tips are in Box 1c and the occupation code in Box 1d. Watch the numbering: on this form Box 1b is card not present transactions, not tips.
